News

March 2022

Congratulations to University of North Texas DMA Candidate and Teaching Fellow, Justin Weis. Justin recently won first place in the Euphonium Artist Solo Competition at the 2022 South Central Tuba Euphonium Conference, as well as first place in the Tuba and Euphonium Charity Series Solo Competition!

About Justin: Though he performs a wide variety of repertoire spanning the 18th century to the present, Justin takes a special interest in contemporary repertoire and the use of electronics, demonstrated through his excellent DMA recital last month. As he nears the completion of his DMA studies, Justin is cultivating a private studio and developing a strong commitment to advocating for the euphonium as an instrument of expression outside the traditional classical settings. He aims to achieve this by presenting recitals at nontraditional venues, and publicizing his music to audiences that may not typically listen to solo euphonium music - functioning as somewhat of a modern euphonium Troubadour!

In addition to performing, Justin dabbles in arranging, having created and self-published a handful of works for euphonium quartet and tuba euphonium ensemble, all of which are available through his website. Arrangements include works by Bruckner, Dvorak, Mendelssohn, and Kalinnikov and range in difficulty from music for young players to works that will challenge even professional ensembles.

February 2022

UNT is home to one of the most prestigious euphonium studios in the world. Student success has been relentless for more than two decades and since our last news post in 2019, the trend has continued with just some of the achievements of our euphonium students highlighted here.

Chris McGinty, won a euphonium position with the United States Air Force Band in 2019, Brandon Hawkins won a euphonium position with the United States Navy Fleet Band in 2020 and Tyler Wise also won a euphonium position with the United States Navy Fleet Band in 2021.

During 2020, Boonyarit Kittaweepitak was appointed Professor of Euphonium at the Mahidol University in Thailand, Thomas Gusewelle was appointed Director of Media and Digital Strategy at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, and Blake Birmingham was appointed Adjunct Professor of Low Brass at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma.

During the past three years the euphonium studio has experienced unprecedented success in the UNT Concerto Competition. In 2019, Brandon Hawkins and Grant Jameson progressed to the final; Grant Jameson won. In 2020, Max Dobson and Greg Stevens reached the final; Greg Stevens won. In 2021 Justin Weis and Tommy Vo progressed to the final, with Ada Brooks selected as an alternate finalist, before Tommy Vo became the studio’s third winner in three years and earlier this year performed the finale from the Joseph Horovitz Euphonium Concerto with the UNT Concert Orchestra.

UNT euphonium players have also experienced competition success nationally and internationally. Awards and prizes have been won at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference (2019), Singapore Brass Festival (2019), Ronald Sachs International Music Competition (2020), Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival (2020 and 2021), Stars and Shipes Mock Band Audition (2021), Vancouver Women's Society of Music competition (2021), and the New Zealand International Brass Festival (2021). In addition, Melissa Ewing won the International Women's Brass Conference solo competition in 2019, and Brandon Hawkins won the US Army Band "Pershing's Own" Tuba-Euphonium Workshop competition in the same year.

2020 saw Greg Stevens receive the prestigious Douglas & Jane Goodrich Award from the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival, Max Swisher became one of the three "Great Grads" awarded by UNT in Spring 2020 and, in 2021, Grant Jameson won the Best Soloist prize at the Kapitol Cory Online Brass Band Championships. In addition, six students also won contracts with the Santa Clara Vanguard, Blue Knights, Boston Crusaders, Bluecoats and the Colts.

Outside the competitive arena, significant student performances have included Brandon Hawkins’ guest soloist appearance with the U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own" Gala Concert in 2019 and Supernova Quartet’s performance at the 100th anniversary of the Texas Music Educators Association in 2020. During the same year, Jamie Lipton and Boonyarit Kittaweepitak made guest artist appearances at the North Texas Low Brass Camp, and Thomas Gusewelle collaborated with Dallas Symphony's Bradley Welch as part of the 'Preston Hollow Sessions'.

In 2021 Euphonium Camerata (pictured here) performed recitals at the Dallas Museum of Art and the International Tuba Euphonium Conference, Tommy Vo gave a recital and masterclass at Lethbridge University, and several students performed concerts in the euphonium section of Dallas Winds, the Lone Star Wind Orchestra and the Dallas Brass Band.

Congratulations to UNT College of Music Alumnus, Alison Mahovsky, for winning the The United States Air Force Band euphonium audition! Of the 21 euphoniumists at the live audition, 12 were UNT College of Music current students or alumni, including both finalists!

Alison has had a long and special history with the US Air Force Band. Her first lesson on the euphonium was with Jen Dayton Cox, former euphonium player with the Air Force Band. She won the Air Force Band’s High School Concerto Competition, attended the Air Force Band’s Collegiate Symposium, and made it to the semi-finals of the Air Force Band's audition earlier this year in May.

Alison finished her Bachelor of Music in 2013, and her Master of Music in Performance and Music Education in 2016 at the University of North Texas under the guidance of Dr Brian L. Bowman. While at UNT, she was named honourable mention at the 2014 International Women's Brass Conference solo competition and won the bronze medal at the 2016 Leonard Falcone International Tuba and Euphonium Festival. Alison will be joining UNT Alumni Erik Lundquist and Chris McGinty in the United States Air Force Band’s Ceremonial Brass after the completion of her Basic Military Training.

Congratulations again to Alison, and we wish you all the best!

Bowman. A finalist for euphonium positions with the United States Marine Band “President’s Own” and the United States Army Field Band, Chris was successful in securing this prestigious position with the U.S. Air Force against stiff competition from all over the United States, including four other current UNT euphonium students. Together with UNT euphonium alumni - Irving Ray, Danny Chapa and Vince Kenney, Chris is a founder member of the North Texas Euphonium Quartet; one of the most active young chamber ensembles in the country and regular guest artists at numerous universities and music conferences throughout the United States. Currently in the latter stages of his Doctoral studies under the supervision of David Childs, Chris will begin performing with the United States Air Force Band’s Ceremonial Brass in the Fall of 2019.

It was great to welcome Regents Professor of Euphonium Emeritus, Dr. Brian Bowman back to UNT this week to give an inspirational masterclass. It was also a treat to meet the dedicatee of Gordon Jacob’s Fantasia, Michael Mamminga, who attended the UNT College of Music Brass Band concert on Monday. This evening (Friday, February 22nd) it’s the Brass Area Showcase at 8pm in Voertman Hall and the euphonium studio will be represented by a UNT Euphonium Quintet. Come along to hear a variety of brass ensembles and soloists perform music by J.S. Bach, Enrique Crespo, Esa Pekka Salonen, Saint-Saens, Erik Morales, Paul Lovatt-Cooper and Brian Balmages.

Congratulations to Sgt. 1st Class Lauren Curran for 11 years of performing with the US Army Field Band. We wish you all the success with your future endeavours as the new Senior Producer!

Congratulations Tommy Vo - UNT College of Music Masters student and participant at the recent United States Air Force Band Collegiate Symposium. The rigorous audition process to select participants for this event included a resume and recorded audio samples, which were then screened by members of the band. The three-day workshop encompassed a variety of events including: clinics, masterclasses, rehearsals, and round table discussions, before concluding with a joint public and live-streamed performance with one of the world’s finest professional wind ensembles - the U.S. Air Force Concert Band, which took place in Schlesinger Concert Hall last night. Our thanks to Jen and John Cox for being such wonderful mentors and providing this amazing experience for young euphonium players.

OCTOBER 2018

Following last week’s inspirational Euphonium Master Classes with Øystein Baadsvik, Dr. Brian Bowman and the United States Air Force Band’s John and Jen Cox, tomorrow (Monday October 29th) we look forward to welcoming Dr. Matthew van Emmerik, who will be giving a short recital and Master Class at 12:00pm in the Voertman Hall. Preluding this, DMA candidate, Vince Kenney will be presenting his dissertation - essentially a "how-to" for euphonium players that want to double on tuba. The presentation will take place from 9:30 - 10:30 in the Recital Hall. All are welcome at both events.

Great couple of days for the UNT Euphonium Studio. Yesterday Øystein Baadsvik treated us to an amazing recital and master class, and today we had the honour of welcoming back UNT euphonium royalty - Regents Professor of Euphonium Emeritus, Dr. Brian L. Bowman, for an excellent excerpts clinic. Later this week we’re looking forward to having the opportunity to work with the euphonium section of the US Air Force Band led by Jennifer D. Cox, SMSgt, USAF, and next week we welcome Dr. Matt van Emmerik to UNT College of Music for a recital and Master Class! Here’s some photos from yesterday’s Master Class, with thanks to Regents Professor of Tuba, Donald C. Little.

SEPTEMBER 2018

In recent weeks both UNT’s Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band have given their debut concerts of the season. On September 20, under the direction of Dennis W. Fisher, the Symphonic Band presented ‘The Russians are Coming!’ - a brilliant concert featuring the music of Dmitri Shostakovich, Dennis Mariev, Vasily Agapkin, Vasily Kalinnikov and Mikhail Glinka. September 27 saw the Wind Symphony, directed by Eugene Migliaro Corporon, give an outstanding wind version world premiere of Wolfgang’s Passing Through; part of a blockbuster program that included Makris’ Aegean Festival Overture, Martin’s Lontano: Symphony and Ticheli’s Acadiana. The ensembles featured several members of the UNT Euphonium Studio, and at both concerts we were delighted to welcome a special guest audience member, retired Professor of Euphonium - Dr. Brian Bowman.

This was a very special year for the UNT Euphonium Studio at the 2018 Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival. This years guest artist was professor emeritus, Dr. Brian Bowman, and UNT students won 1st place in both the Student and Artist Division competition; Congratulations Greg Stevens and Blake Birmingham!

Congratulations to UNT current student, Donald Bruce, and alumnus, Blake Birmingham, on their recent appointment with the Lone Star Wind Orchestra. We wish them the best of luck and we will be hoping to hear them live in concert soon!

AUGUST 2018

Message from newly appointed Euphonium Professor: David Childs

"Welcome to the University of North Texas Euphonium Studio. During the last two decades this institution has become an iconic place of study for euphonium players the world over, with many of its alumni now filling some of the most prestigious euphonium positions in the United States and beyond.

"In addition to the talent and musicianship of those that have passed through UNT, the prestige and success associated with this Euphonium Studio is down to the dedication of Dr. Brian Bowman - legendary euphonium soloist and mentor to so many wonderful musicians.

"As we embark on a new academic year, I consider it a great honour to be here as Dr. Bowman’s successor, and together with the 35 euphonium students currently enrolled, we look forward to continuing the great UNT euphonium tradition."
